Consensys has acquired the Singapore-based wallet provider Web3Auth on June 2, 2025, to improve MetaMask’s seed phrase management.

Consensys’ acquisition of Web3Auth significantly aims to simplify wallet management, enhancing accessibility and security for MetaMask’s extensive user base.

Strategic Integration

Consensys, led by CEO Joe Lubin, has acquired Web3Auth to improve MetaMask’s user experience. The decision underscores the importance of easier onboarding and management, as 35% of users currently do not back up their seed phrases, posing risks. As Consensys noted, “Recent data shows that 35% of users do not back up their seed phrases, leading to a significant risk of fund loss.”

Web3Auth, founded in 2019, will integrate with MetaMask, involving its 30-person team. With this acquisition, Consensys will incorporate WebAuth’s authentication methods, potentially reducing the risks associated with lost seed phrases.

MetaMask’s 250 million users, alongside Web3Auth’s 50 million users, will benefit from improved security and user-friendly features. The strategic move aims for mainstream crypto adoption, eliminating traditional barriers. According to Dan Finlay, Co-founder of MetaMask, “This is definitely about getting more people in. It’s also about preventing people from falling out in devastating ways.”

No specific tokens are directly impacted. However, integrating Web3Auth may strengthen Ethereum’s ecosystem by improving user retention and minimizing loss risks.

This acquisition is a part of Consensys’ broader efforts to bolster the Ethereum infrastructure, reflecting a notable trend in the industry towards simplified user experiences without compromising security.
